New York State Sues Johnson & Johnson For Alleged Opioid Epidemic

New York State Sues Johnson & Johnson For Alleged Opioid Epidemic

Johnson & Johnson is now facing another lawsuit, this time from the state of New York. The state demands to recover $2 billion over the pharmaceutical giant’s alleged role in the opioid epidemic. Millions of Americans became addicted to the strong painkillers. Hundreds of thousands of people died after using these painkillers.

According to the lawsuit, a division of J&J invested millions of dollars into marketing opioids and belittling the risks. The company proceeded to promote the drugs even after government officials warned that opioids were far more dangerous than any other pharmaceutical products.

Many people died due to opioid addiction and New York State continues taking action against those who added to this public health catastrophe, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

The company is not new to lawsuits in other states as well. In 2019 an Oklahoma judge ordered the company to pay almost $500 million after ordering that it had caused opioid addiction in the state.

New York is not suing Johnson & Johnson directly for promoting a dangerous drug. The suit is brought by the state’s Department of Financial Services and claims that the company did insurance fraud by encouraging doctors and patients to use the addictive pain killers.

New York authorities dispute that the prescriptions and the resulting costs connected with patients becoming addicted to opioids are nothing but an insurance fraud. The case will go to trial in mid-January.

This is not a first lawsuit against the company. They are facing numerous lawsuits for other products such as their talcum powder is linked  to ovarian cancer.

If you using the painkillers (or other products) of this company caused you any health issues, make sure to check hurt.com and seek an attorney in your area.
